Ponheary Ly Foundation – Siem Reap & Preah Vihear Rural Areas, CAMBODIA (48 Girls)
With the closure of the Dormitory during the course of 2024, the Ponheary Ly Foundation has developed a secondary school scholarship scheme to support talented girls living at home. Though local schools in these remote areas have improved, they are not as those in the City. Girls graduating from these remote schools will not be as prepared for University and so the Foundation is providing a range of additional support, including extra English classes and textbooks, and tutoring in Mathematics and Advance Science funded by PAWA. Without this support, girls risk not being able to graduate. The targeted cohorts are girls at two locations: Srayang Learning Centre (SLC) in southern Preah Vihear Province, where the girls track out of three different primary schools in villages deep in the forest and are picked up every morning in converted army trucks, and Knar Village Learning Center (KVLC). Both communities are well known to the Foundation and all girls previously in the dormitory came from this remote area.
“When I go home it feels good to talk to younger students and help them study. I would like to go to university and become a social worker. There are not many in Cambodia and we need more.”
– Srey, a former graduate of the dormitory funded by PAWA
