Children of the Mekong – Negros Island, PHILIPPINES (5 Girls)
We have a new project in the Philippines this year, partnering with Children of the Mekong who run the Dumaguete Residential Centre. Dumaguete is the capital of Negros Oriental on the island of Negros, well to the south of Manila. It is one of the poorest provinces in the Philippines and opportunities for higher education for young people are severely limited. many young people live in their parents’ homes, often in remote areas. These young people lack knowledge of workplace behavior, professional networks, and access to universities in the city, which are too expensive.
We are supporting 5 talented girls to stay at the Centre and pursue degree courses at Universities in Dumaguete. Apart from providing safe and welcoming accommodation, the Centre also provides holistic support to encourage intellectual, emotional and self-development and the girls will be encouraged to become responsible, well-rounded individuals who give back to society.
Many students at the centre are from disadvantaged backgrounds such as subsistence farming and the five PAWA girls are the first to enrol in university in their families.
On the Island of Negros, many young peopl4 live in their parents’ homes, often in remote areas. These young people lack knowledge of workplace behavior, professional networks, and access to universities in the city, which are too expensive.
The Dumaguete Centre of the Children of the Mekong provides a safe space for young people living in extreme poverty in isolated rural areas who aspire to earn a university degree. The Centre addresses their urgent educational needs, supporting their social inclusion and professional development to improve their quality of life. It offers accommodation and ongoing support throughout their 4-year university journey, with a team that includes a trained overseas volunteer, a social worker, and a caretaker who takes on a parental role.
This year, PAWA will support 5 teenage girls as they begin their university education on Negros
Island, Philippines.
